On a study abroad trip in Italy I spent my time looking at the Gothic architecture style and how it flourished, especially in Cathedrals. I used the photos I had taken on the trip and created a series of informational typographic posters to bring this style into a modern context.
Inspired by the stained glass windows in cathedrals. They were used sparingly, often placed directly above the altar to draw the viewers eye up to the heavens then back down.
The pointed archway reduced stress on other elements of the building, allowing supporting columns to be reduced in size, fitting the overall Gothic aesthetic.
Inspired by French Gothic architecture, artists in Italy used carved, colored marble to create intricate stonework sculptures across the outside of the cathedrals.
